VIDEO: Cool tablet keyboard innovation!

Well Tabletex Computex starts next week and we were lucky to get a chance to have yet another quick peak at yet another new tablet, this time from Taiji Electronics. It’s an x86 based tablet running Windows 7 but it’s standout feature is a very innovative implementation of a removable Bluetooth keyboard.

Watch the video below to check out this keyboard innovation. Sadly we weren’t able to have any real play around time with the device itself which looks to be an early prototype. I did run my fingers over the keyboard and imagine myself cranking out this article... and I have to say it was a very very usable keyboard. Much more so than any onboard software version... including the iPad.

While a Bluetooth keyoard in itself isn't anything revolutionary, the tucking into the backside of the device itself so that it does'nt have to be carried separately is definitely a handy idea. than 9.0.115!

Considering the x86 based device is only slightly thicker than an iPad you could easily imagine ARM processor based tablet makers copying being inspired to add this into their designs too!

DIY 13.4" Carbon Fiber Touchscreen Tablet PC

This is a project I have been working on in my spare time for the last few months. I wanted a Windows 7 touchscreen tablet with a large screen that could handle HD video and wasn't too thick or power hungry. The build cost for this was around $600-700. I used an MSI X320 motherboard and screen as the starting point and I made the body out of carbon fiber.

uncle openAOS needs YOU! - Maemo/Mer anyone? (Video inside!)

This is one for the curious "me too, me too, wanna try!" people.

Gaap/homen3 asked me on IRC today how to try Maemo/Mer on gen7.
Well we looked it up.
It was straight forward.
And to our surprise it boots and works¹.
¹= for values of works, the boot process looks psychedelic and a lot of things don't work properly of course, but the main GUI does work.

Basically:

• You take: http://stskeeps.subnetmask.net/mer/0.16/mer-armel-smartq5-rootfs-v0.16.tar.gz
• Throw that into an 500M+ ext3 image.
• For good measure throw in some parts of the original Archos SDE image.
• Modify menu.lst (the image needs /sbin/init)
• ...
• profit!

Just before everyone starts to demand things.
This was just for fun! If someone seriously wants that as an working image THEY have to do it. Contact openAOS for help, but we won't do it!

PS: currently wifi is not really working. I might get the image updated to work but you will have to add your wlanconf.nvs to /root/wlanconf.nvs in that image for wifi to work. (this file contains device specific calibration data!)

HP Hurricane webOS tablet may be released in 3rd quarter

We first speculated that since HP bought out Palm, they would come out wth a webOS tablet. According to many industry insiders, this appears to be more of a reality now. An insider at HP tells us that a webOS tablet under the code name HP Hurricane could be released the third quarter of this year.

Not too long ago--actually, only three weeks back--HP was still bragging about its HP Slate, a Windows 7 based tablet that was supposed to become the new iPad killer. However, early reviews suggested that the HP slate should just kill itself and that's exactly what appears to have happened.

"It is a really interesting device, but runs as slow as a turtle," says Los Angeles industry analyst Paul Mueller. "I think they could have had something with a faster processor, but that would have led to less battery life than the Slate already had." Like us, Mr. Mueller looks forward to the HP Hurricane. "If rumors of this tablet are true, this can be a killer device--webOS is an outstanding operating system for a tablet."

Update für das HP TouchSmart tm2 *Update*

ntel SU7300 ausgestattet ist, einem Update unterzogen. Als Prozessor wird nun der Intel Core i3 / Intel Core i5 eingesetzt und als Grafiklösung kommt die ATI Mobility Radeon 5450 zum Einsatz. Somit können wir ein bisschen mehr Performance erwarten.

Update: Wie mir soeben mitgeteilt wurde, können wir mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit Ende Juni mit den neuen Intel Core i-Prozessoren im HP TouchSmart tm2 rechnen. Ihr müsst euch also noch etwas gedulden.
